Happy New Year everyone!! Well we all made it to another year and may I add that it was only by the grace of God. With every New Year comes its promises and its hopes and but let’s not forget that it also comes with its many disappointments. As we look around at the atmosphere of our nation, our world today, we can’t help but notice the worried looks on the faces of many; even the faces of many believers. 2009 was a very rough year for our nation and our world. We heard so many promises made that they said would fix our nation’s many ills but sadly we saw so many failures to keep all those promises, but that’s what happens when we put our trust in what man says he will do.
The psalmist writes in Psalm 119:140 “Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them.” The word for promises is better translated as meaning the Word of God. The Word of God, His promises have been thoroughly tested as the psalmist says. Psalm 12:6 “And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times.” Psalm 18:30 “As for God, His way is perfect; the Word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in Him. Thoroughly tested, flawless, perfect, shield and refuge; true promises that we believers can put our trust and hope in; promises that will take us through whatever we may face in 2010.
The psalmist goes on to declare in Psalm 119:148 “My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on Your promises.” Many times as a child I would remember closing my eyes or putting my hands over my eyes when the dark of the night came, thinking if I did that it would go away. Even today I find that I still don’t like the dark times of the night; places and times where I can’t see to decide what action or direction I should take. I am much more comfortable when it is daylight so I can see what is facing me and I can make the proper decision or take the proper action. Yet there have been many times in my life as a believer that the Lord didn’t allow me to have that daylight, you may say. He just required that I trust in Him and His promises, His Word.
I truly believe that the Lord is going to do a mighty work in His people in 2010, but when the watches of the night come in 2010, and trust me they will surely come, will we, His people, be found faithfully standing on His Word, His promises.
My prayer for the church of the Living God in 2010 and I hope that it’s also yours as well, is that we the people of God would be seen by all the world as a true light in a world filled with much darkness and many questions.
As I close may the Lord bless all that you do in 2010 but always remember to keep this promise in the center of your heart, “The One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world!”
