Good News?!?

If you are like me, you spend way too much time watching those TV news programs. You know those programs that look to keep the American public up to date on all the current happenings in our city, nation and world. Sadly, most of the news they report is bad and depressing to see and hear; yet for some crazy reason, we still desire to know and hear all that is going on.

Have you ever had someone come up to you and say, ‘Boy, do I have some news for you!’ When that happens, there is a very good chance you are about to hear some juicy gossip about someone or something, which is not what we are supposed to be listening to. Or you have those who come up to you and say, ‘I’ve got some bad news for you.’ Immediately our thoughts run to the most horrible, possible news we could ever imagine getting and our hearts sink. One of the definitions given for the word news is: ‘Information not previously known to someone.’

Proverbs 15:30 “A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news brings health to the bones” The beginning of Isaiah 52:7 says “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news Jesus said in John 16:15 “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation”  Proverbs 25:25 “Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land”  Bad news will always be around and there will always be those who love to report bad news. That is why it is so important that as Christians, we are are seen as people who bring good news for all to hear

As we come to the beginning of the Christmas season, we are quick to hear the news about Black Friday, or Cyber Monday or any other news about what is on sale for Christmas, that the real meaning of Christmas is thrown on the back burner. In Luke 2 we read the account of the angel Gabriel appearing to some unknown shepherds who were out in the fields at night watching over their sheep.

Now if you had wanted to get some very important news out to the world, you probably wouldn’t have picked some unknown shepherds in the fields watching over their sheep to get that done. You most likely would have gone to the most popular news station at that time or contacted the most influential person of the time or maybe even rented some of those bight lights that shine light beams to the sky to possibly write your news in the skies, to get your news out; but not our Lord.

Luke 2:9-10 “An angel of the Lord appeared and the glory of the Lord shown around them (those unknown shepherds) and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord” WOW, is that some good news or what!!

‘Though the world has turned the good news of Christmas into the news of ‘Black Friday’ ‘Cyber Monday’ and any other news of what is on sale, it still doesn’t take away from the truth that Christmas is about the good news that a Savior has been born for all the people. If those who were the closest to you and me were asked what news do we normally bring; what do you think they would say?

Christmas is all about the good news of great joy that a Savior has been born for all the people. Yes, some gifts may be be exchanged at Christmas but the greatest gift we could ever give to someone is the good news that Jesus has come just for them. May you and your family be richly blessed this Christmas, and rest in the good news that a Savior has been born for all the world!!!
