Discovering Truth in Psalm 119: Your Spiritual Lamp – Children’s Church at New Day

Welcome to another inspiring message from our Children’s Church leader Michael Townsend. Children’s and Youth Sunday School is right after worship at New Day Christian Church of Las Vegas. We meet in the sanctuary at 9:30 AM

Greetings brothers and sisters in Christ and children of God,

“Thy Word” is a song that Amy Grant recorded. I am sure many of you have heard the song. It is a beautiful song, perhaps because of her lovely voice, perhaps because of the words in the song, or perhaps a little bit of both. However, did you know the words are from scripture? Of course you did, but for those who didn’t know, you will find the verse in Psalm 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

If you have ever gone out into the darkness with a flashlight, you most likely shined it on the ground that you were walking on so you would see the path and not stumble. The Word of God is like that light you used in the darkness, which guides us on our path so we will not stumble in life and sin.

If we continue reading the following verse, the psalmist claims he will follow God’s righteous laws and praise the Lord as he asks God to teach the psalmist His laws and he will not forget the laws. The psalmist later says that the laws are his heritage and joy of his heart, and that his heart is set on keeping the decrees to the very end.

We often only read a verse and miss the rest of the words that were intended for us to read. The word of God is a light that will and can shine on the path in which we are walking, but looking further we see that in this case it is about wanting to know God’s laws and following them until the end. Do you not want to know all of God’s laws and follow them?

Many of us receive emails or read our daily devotions with a verse of the day. I encourage you to not just read that verse but go beyond it or even perhaps a little before it and grasp the whole Word of God. Truly use the Word of God as a lamp unto your feet so you may be guided on your path and not stray from it or stumble and fall. If you become lost in the dark, let the light show you back to the path in which God wants to walk with you. God is always walking with you on your path, but He will not stray from the path yet will be there waiting for you to find your way back to the path by using Thy Word.

Last week we did not have children’s church because it was the first Sunday of the month. Moving forward, the little lambs will have children’s church each week. We will continue to meet together in worship and then be dismissed to go to children’s church after worship. That being said this week we will be talking about Moses and how God saved him and used him to save his people.

I look forward to worshiping with all of you tomorrow with songs of praise and dancing before Him who shows us the path of righteousness. If for whatever reason I do not see you tomorrow, may the Lord bless you with joy, peace, and may He guide you, comfort you, and heal you when you are in need.

God bless you,

Your brother in Christ,

Michael (aka Mr. Michael)
