The Lighthouse: A Symbol of Hope in Christ – New Day Christian Church Children’s Ministry

Greetings brothers and sisters in Christ, and children of God,

Have you ever been to a lighthouse or even inside one? I am sure we have all seen them or at least pictures of them. They look amazing, and how they work is just as amazing as their history. The oldest lighthouse in the world is the Tower of Hercules, or the Hercules lighthouse, located in A Coruna, in Spain. It was built in the 1st Century and used oil lamps for light. It now, of course, uses electricity to guide the ships through the rocky cove. The oldest lighthouse in America that is still in operation is the Sandy Hook Lighthouse in Highlands, New Jersey, which was built in 1764 and was the 5th lighthouse to be built in America. The Boston Lighthouse in Boston, Massachusetts, was built in 1716 but rebuilt in 1783.

The purpose of a lighthouse is to direct ships through dangerous areas and most commonly the seas or bays. The light that is reflected from the top of the house is a beacon that shows the mariners where to drive the ships and avoid the rocks of the coastline. During the night or fierce storms, the light guides them either to the shore for safe harbor or through the storm or darkness.

In scripture, God refers to his son and says He will put His Spirit on him and that he will be the light for the Gentiles (Isaiah 42:1-9). Jesus said this about himself, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

(John 8:12). Jesus is our Lighthouse during the times of darkness or the storms of life that rage around us. He guides us if we allow Him to. It is when we refuse to let Him lead us that the storms will destroy the hope that drives our ship through the darkness.

I am sure many have believed that Jesus is the light at some point in their life, but still find themselves in the darkness. God is not a mean god, but a loving god who desires you and wants you to trust Him and have faith. It is the faith in Him that counts you as righteous, and it is that faith that allows you to trust Him. By trusting the Lord, you show hope in who He is, which is our salvation.

To quote an old song, The Lighthouse on the Hillside, “If it wasn’t for the lighthouse, where would this ship be? I thank God for the lighthouse, I owe my life to Him, for Jesus is the lighthouse.” As life’s storms rage about you and you enter a dark season of life, know that the Lighthouse still stands above all lighthouses so that you can find your way through to the other side, where hope and love abound. And just so you know, my Lighthouse has stood since the beginning of time.

Last week, the little lambs learned about the many miracles that Jesus performed before his death and after his resurrection. This week, we will discuss Christ’s transfiguration and a few disciples who were witnesses to it.

I look forward to worshiping the Lord, our God, with you tomorrow as we sing praises of joy to the One who gives Light to the world and dance before Him who deserves all our praises. If, for whatever reason, I do not see you tomorrow, may the Lord bless you with love, peace, and joy, and may He comfort you, heal you, and guide you when you need it.

God bless you,

Your brother in Christ
