September 2009
In the month of September we enter into the season of Autumn or Fall as many refer to it. During the Fall season we find that the days are getting shorter; the long days of Summer are over. I don’t know about you but I love it when I have more daylight; it just seems that I get more accomplished. The Fall season also means that winter is just around the corner and I don’t do well with the cold, maybe it’s because of my Latin blood, I don’t know. In the Fall the leaves begin to fall off from the trees and I know that you all can hardly wait to get out in your yard and rake them all up, right:) Leaves are natures food factories. When the leaves fall, the trees rest and they begin to live off the food they have stored up during the summer. The grey skies of Fall bring with it less active days and for many, the thought of that alone can allow depression to set into their lives; it is the same for some Christians.
So many Christians today live their lives running from one experience to another, from one goose bump moment to another; it’s become all about experiencing the sensational for them. They truly believe that the Lord’s work is only done when the spectacular is taking place and I believe that they have sadly missed the beauty and power of listening to the soft still voice of the Lord.
The Lord told Elijah in 1 Kings 19 to go and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord for the Lord was about to pass by. A great and powerful wind tore the mountain apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord but the Lord was not there. Then came an earthquake but the Lord was not in the earthquake. A fire also came but the Lord was not in the fire. Then Elijah heard a gentle whisper and the Lord’s voice spoke to Elijah.
Believe me when I say that I earnestly desire for the Lord to do great and might things in my life and the life of the church but if we don’t know His gentle whisper above the things that we may consider to be mighty, I believe that we will miss the truly spectacular move of God.
I said that in the Fall the trees take a rest and live off the food they have stored up during the Summer. Our society today is guilty of too much spending and not enough saving or storing up of our money for the lean times that will and have come.
Jesus said in Luke 6:43-45 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn bushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. for out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” Jesus also tells us in Matthew 6:19-24 not to store up for ourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and thieves break in and steal but we are to store up for ourselves treasures in heaven.
What spiritual truths have you stored up from this past summer that will take you through the grey and often dreary times of the Fall? What has the Holy Spirit been speaking to you that may need to fall off of your life so that He may bring new growth to your life?
Listen today for His gentle whisper as He speaks to your heart so that you may know what to do as your spiritual skies begin grow grey and things began to fall from your life and then get ready for a mighty move of the Lord!
